COMMERCIAL DRIVER
Summary - The Commercial Driver operates an 18-wheel cab and trailer trucks and other similar heavy trucks over the road along interstate routes. Usually the routes are short haul with a return to home base after each shift, but runs requiring the driver to sleep over may be required from time to time.
Supervision - This position is under the direct supervision of the company President and does not provide supervision to others. Occasionally will mentor or assist a new employee.
Hours - Full time drivers will work up to 80 hours in a seven (7) day cycle running from Sunday to Saturday. Shift schedules and amount of work will vary based on the jobs available and are not guaranteed. Part time drivers will work no more than 30 hours per week and drive on short haul routes with a total drive time of less than 10 hours run. Full time drivers get preference for work and shifts.
Primary Job Duties - The primary duty of the driver is to safely operate the 18-wheel truck on the assigned route, picking up and delivering the cargo. This includes:
· Inspection of the driving cab and trailer to be used that day.
· Maintaining a DOT mandated driving log. This will be an electronic log, but a paper back up may need to be completed in certain circumstances.
· Safe and precise driving including backing into loading bays, city operation and highway driving.
· Safe hook-up of various trailer types to the cab.
· Interaction with the customer’s Shipping and Receiving staff on either end of the delivery route.
· Supervising or verifying the proper loading of the trailer and securing of the load.
· Maintaining proper paperwork as required for each load and the day’s operations.
· Safe operation of cell phone and other electronic communication and logging devices.
· Help the company develop customers and work opportunities by passing information on to the President and by being a good representative of the company.
Experience - This position requires the employee to be able to read and write information specific to the job on road signs, labels, work orders and charts. Knowledge of numbers, numerical order to at least 2 decimal points and basic mathematics are required. Ability to take and understand measurements using equipment such as scales, rulers, thermometers and clocks are required.
This position requires a class A Commercial Drivers License. The employee must have a current DOT medical certification and is subject to random drug testing as proscribed by the FMCSA.
The employee must be able to speak clearly and fluently in English to be able to interact with the Shipping and Receiving department employees encountered at the various customer sites.
The employee would normally bring their own cell phone.
